Newsday: Food sharing Tuesday in Huntington Station

On Tuesday, there was a great write up of Long Island Food Not Bombs on Newsday.com. Alex Reisner, a Huntington Food Share participate, wrote the article and we hope you'll help us by spreading the word about it.

Today and every Tuesday, Long Island Food Not Bombs shares food, clothing, books and toys with the Huntington community. The gathering of people at East 6th Street and Fairground Avenue (near the intersection of Pulaski and Depot Roads), ranging from elementary school students to grandparents, gives out groceries and other items that would otherwise be thrown away or go to waste.

The food is largely surplus donated by supermarkets like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, as well as local farms and attendees of Food Not Bombs events. Clothing, books, cookware, seeds, toys and toiletries find their way into the hands of those who need them via private donations and estates. As summer ends, families holding garage sales sometimes donate their leftover wares, rather than throwing away useful items that others may be doing without.

According to JonSTeps, who co-founded the Long Island chapter with his friend Alex Witkowski, "The aim of Food Not Bombs is to fight the social, economic and environmental oppressions that are inflicted upon our community and our planet." They're doing it from the ground up, one full belly and clothed back at a time.

To help with distribution, donate items or receive food, simply arrive at the food share location (E.6th street and Fairground Av.) on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. There are also shares in Farmingville on Thursdays at 6:30 and Hempstead on Sundays at 1:30.

thank you so much for what you do! I'm so glad more and more people get interested in preserving the planet we live in and our small (and big) neighbours we are responsible for, trying to make the world we live in better. have read lots of articles on the topic downloaded by torrent search engine , but always glad to find smth new. I'd gladly participated myself. it's so easy, but the result is so much worth. best wishes!
