Hey Jon, I don't know if you remember me but I had contacted you a little while ago about setting up a FNB in Port Jeff. How's it going?
I had wanted to ask you about what sort of ideas you had about that. Were you hoping to have a group in the area collecting and distributing to local shelters, actually cooking and serving the food themselves, etc.? What sort of stuff would you expect from a FNB group opening up in the area? Do you happen to know anyone living in and around the immediate area that might be into helping organize?
I'm still pretty interested in the idea of helping organize something in the area, and I've been speaking with a few friends who seem like they might be interested.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Port Jeff follow up
Hey Jonathan, It's great to hear from you again. A Port Jeff FNB would be awesome and I'd love to help you and your friends out in attaining food.
Basically, the way Huntington and Hempstead are set up is as follows. We collect food from numerous local health food stores, restaurants, etc... This food is given out on a weekly basis as groceries. We also use some of that food to cook hot meals for distribution on site as well.
Ideally it would be awesome if a Port Jeff FNB could do the same. That way people living on the street could get hot meals, and low income families could get their groceries for the week.
On the few occasions when we have extra food we pass it along to local shelters, but I'd personally avoid strictly doing that because in my experience most shelters on long island are pretty poorly run and will actually waste the food.
As for what would be expected by a Port Jeff FNB, I'd say as long as you were giving out vegan/vegetarian food for free to your community then you'd be a FNB. I'd also add that if you were giving out prepared food it should all be 100% vegan. If your giving out groceries it ok to give out food that is only vegetarian as long as the ingredients are clearly labeled, that way people know what they're getting.
I personally don't know of anyone out in Port Jeff that could help out, but if you're interested in helping to start a Port Jeff Chapter I could forward along a bulletin on myspace, facebook, etc.. and see if there are others who would like to help.
Again, it's awesome that you and your friends are interested in this and to be honest it only takes 4 or 5 committed people to get something like this started. If you want it might be a good idea to set up a meeting at some point in the future and invite people from the Port Jeff community to come and participate.
Do you guys have a kitchen you can use? Would you guys have access to a car/s to help out with food pickups? Is there a specific location and day you'd be interested in doing your food share?
Sorry this response was so long, i hope it answered some questions, feel free to ask me anything thats on your mind, or share any thoughts you had. Lets get this thing together!!!
Bests,
Jon
