Because Farmingville is just starting out and there are already "regulars" who come by and some are already helping unload the car for me, I thought it would be helpful to keep some sort of "order" to hand out a half page flyer thanking these people and some suggestions to help it feel more community oriented and try to get everyone involved. I realize there are already flyers on the website, but I have come up with the following to try to personalize it. We also desperately need food from nearby stores instead of coming from Hicksville. Once the farms close up, I hope there is not a shortage. I also realize it is us old folk who are the ones trying to put some order into the food shares. My fear is that media could show up at one of the most unorganized times and put a bad light on the whole wonderful event.
My flyer, and feel free to comment/add/detract/hate/love:

Thank you for participating in the Food Not Bombs food share.

By participating you are helping to get out the message that Food is a right, not a privilege. We are also supporting each other in a world where materialism and corporate wealth are leaving behind that which is so important – community.

Please spread the word to your neighbors about our food shares.

To make this a continued success we also need help acquiring items to share, such as donations of food from local supermarkets and bodegas, as well as unloading the cars and cleaning the grounds up afterwards. Of course it is understood that items are hard to come by and these are only suggestions, but any help is appreciated.

Thanks again for your support, it is a pleasure meeting you and we hope to see you again next week.

The flyer was translated and given out in Farmingville and I believe it helped. Although people waited for all the food to be placed out on the tables, the grabbing of the food by some was a little unsettling. I think this could change if we had more help. The great news is, though, the apparent desire people had to help out as witnessed by a lot of people cleaning up by breaking down the boxes as they were emptied and picking up garbage off the ground throughout the whole food share. When the food was gone, so was all the garbage.

Karen,

Thank you Thank you for starting a forum discussion on this topic. We may have some new supporters who can help us translate. I think we do have a chance to get genuine community involvement in Farmingville right from the beginning. Let me see if I can get some translating volunteers next week at Huntington, and lets see if anyone in Farmingville wants to help tomorrow.
