Join Long Island Food Not Bombs for our 4 year anniversary

To all friends, volunteers, busybodies and curious onlookers. Long Island Food Not Bombs invites you to celebrate with us for our 4-year anniversary. On Sunday, July 25th @ 2pm we’ll be marking this special occasion with extra treats and excitement at our Hempstead Food Share.
It’s really amazing to think how far we’ve all come. Starting in the summer of 2006, Long Island Food Not Bombs consisted of less than half a dozen volunteers. We had one food share, in Hempstead, and it consisted of a single folding table covered with bananas and bread.
Now, we have hundreds of volunteers doing everything from community beautification projects, sharing food, organizing clothing collections, contributing to community literary magazines, sharing gardening skills & materials, facilitating projects combating racism & sexism… the list just goes on!
Our food shares have also matured into free supermarkets where thousands of Long Islanders come for their weekly groceries, clothing, books, seeds, etc… Even more remarkable, our food shares now occur in five different areas across three counties in Long Island; they’re located in - Hempstead, Coram, Huntington, Farmingville & Bedstuy (you can find more information about them all on our website www.lifnb.com/food_shares).
In essence, we organize 260 food shares in a year and we’re still growing fast. This year, like the last we’re sharing millions of pounds of fresh groceries and other necessities. In addition, we’re keeping a countless number of our friends and neighbors in their homes and from going hungry.
Along with all of these amazing achievements is the fact that Long Island Food Not Bombs has now become the largest chapter of the international Food Not Bombs movement. With chapters in over a thousand cities and across six continents, the international Food Not Bombs movement is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
So with all this said, we invite you to join us Sunday for this very special occasion. Also, if you’ve never participated with Long Island FNB, please consider volunteering 1 or 2 hours a week. By doing so you’re helping hundreds, if not thousands, of people in your community. It’s easy, fun and a great way to make new friends. If you’re interested just email us (LongIslandFoodNotBombs[at]gmail[dot]com) or call us at 631.223.4370.
In solidarity,
JonSTeps & Long Island Food Not Bombs
