Some Updates & the LIFNB Four Year Anniversary!
So yes, it’s been a very long time since we’ve sent out any updates and we’re sorry about that. We’ve been overworked, massively over worked.
Since the beginning of this year we’ve helped tent city residents who’s shelters were destroyed by the Town of Huntington. We’ve joined with BedStuy Food Not Bombs and now we share groceries 4 days a week. We’ve had to confront racists in Suffolk County who now are running a campaign to destroy us. We’ve had to begin each day figuring out how we’re going to transport 10,000’s of pounds of food to 1,000’s of people.
It’s been a lot. We’ve been shorthanded, we’ve been struggling, but we pull it off because Long Island Food Not Bombs is something special.
Four years ago, this June, my friends and I started this ragtag collective we now call LIFNB. Back then we had one food share, in Hempstead, with one table of bread. In contrast, our Hempstead Food Share now has nearly a dozen tables covered with a weeks supply of groceries for the hundreds of people that join us each Sunday.
This also goes beyond Hempstead, organizing food shares in Nassau, Suffolk & Brooklyn; Long Island Food Not Bombs is solidarity across many of our neighborhoods, 4 days a week, 208 days a year (and growing!).
Truly everything over these past 4 years has been incredible, from community zines to community gardens. It’s been so incredible that we invite you to join us this year in celebration.
Intrigued? Well, we will soon be announcing a week of celebration (coming this June) that will hopefully outdo all of our expectations. Details will be coming soon so pay close attention to our website.
In the mean time, we depend on your support and your time as volunteers. Please considering volunteering 1 or 2 hours a week. By doing so you’re helping hundreds if not thousands. It’s easy, fun and a great way to make new friends. If you’re interested just email us (LongIslandFoodNotBombs[at]gmail[dot]com) or call us at 631.223.4370.
In solidarity,
JonSTeps & Long Island Food Not Bombs
