Help Save the 123 Community Space!
Our neighboring Bed Stuy Food Not Bombs chapter cooks awesome meals each Saturday at the 123 Community Space off 123 Tompkins Ave. in Bed Stuy Brooklyn. Along with hosting Food Not Bombs, the 123 Space also houses projects like - an after school program for children of all ages, a freegan bike workshop, screen printing classes, sewing workshops, etc... and it does all of this for free. But these programs and Bed Stuy FNB are threatened by a landlord dead set on eviction because of his disapproval of community spaces.
The 123 Space and BedStuy FNB need your help. To learn more please read on.
123 COMMUNITY SPACE TO FIGHT EVICTION, MARCH TO CITY COUNCIL OFFICE
Community members and volunteers of the 123 Community Space in Bed-Stuy
have announced a public demonstration against ongoing threats of eviction.
On Monday, June 8th, at 3pm, a rally will be held at 123 Tompkins Avenue,
followed by a march to the office of local city council representative
Albert Vann to seek his support.
The 123 Community Space in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, has served for two years as
an important resource and host to a full and vibrant calendar of events.
Every week, its doors are open to the public for free programs such as
bike workshops, childcare, and screen-printing, along with monthly music
nights and pancake brunches that bring together residents and volunteers
from across the city.
In recent months, the 123 has faced eviction by landlord Mayer Friedman,
who, despite good-faith efforts on the part of the tenants, refuses to
negotiate with the Board of Directors of the 123 Community Space. He has
also consistently neglected to perform basic maintenance and necessary
structural repairs to the building. The tenants, however, continue to
fulfill their obligations, respecting the building and the neighborhood
and paying rent on time.
It is for these reasons that the neighbors and the community at large
demand an immediate end to eviction proceedings and a formal lease for the
123 Community Space, to protect against such underhanded tactics in the
future. We call on local residents and elected officials alike to come
out in support of this invaluable public resource.
